Fondly known as 'Swifts', The Swift Industrial Supply Co. was founded in January 1979 by Anne and Peter Gillespie. The company's aim was to be a 'one stop' industrial supplier to the gold mines and heavy industry in and around the Johannesburg area through service, price and product excellence.

The same winning business principles are being applied today, but the organisation's focus has expanded to include the retail market, through the launch of two exciting and successfully competitive brands - EDGE (cutting tools) and Herschell (lubricants).

Doug Herschell joined in 1986 and the organisation diversified, with the commissioning of a lubricant and aerosol manufacturing plant on our premises. The company has since grown from manufacturing a single product back then to the 180 plus product lines currently under the Herschell brand.

It is a very exciting period for Swifts. As a manufacturer and importer of specialised products, the company's own brands are enjoying a period of dramatic growth in the retail market. The combination of superior products, which surpass even the most stringent of industrial standards, competitive pricing and the team's wealth of technical knowledge and problem-solving capabilities proving to be an effective one.

In fact, many customers consider the company's unique, informative selling techniques and on-going technical after-sales back-up service a welcome, fresh approach in an, otherwise, technically-deprived market sector.

Spear-headed by Basil Gard, Peter Gillespie, Grant Gillespie and Doug Herschell, the Swifts retail team is well equipped to deal with the demands of this challenging market and is on track to establish both the EDGE and Herschell brands as market leaders in the cutting tool and lubricant retail market sectors, respectively.
